With ever rising popularity of the game of golf, the golf courses are also on rise over the world and already there are thousands of golf courses of various definitions including regular, mini or links golf courses spread all over the globe. *Augusta National: This golf course is located in Augusta, Georgia and is home to the Masters Tournament. This golf course belongs to an exclusive club though, such that only members and special guests are allowed to play.

* Pebble Beach Golf Course, California : It is a very favorite golf course for both the amateurs and professionals. A pro-am tournament is held here every year where large number of celebrity participates to play and encourage pro-golfers. Although it is a public course, it is not cheap either to play here.

*Shinnecock Hills: This golf course is found in Southampton, New York, which is one of the oldest golf courses in the United States. Thus, you can expect it to exemplify an old tradition with a design originating in’91. Only members to the club are allowed to play in this course.

* Pinehurst Resort; Pinehurst , North Carolina : Being hosts to two US Opens, this too is an old golf course with rich old traditions. Naturally it is also a favorite course for golfers from every place to play here. It is a public golf course.

*Prairie Dunes: This Midwestern course set in Hutchison, Kansas is one of the most challenging golf courses ever. There are a total of’ holes and numerous obstacles such as sand traps, wind, among other natural elements. This course though is available exclusively for members and even membership into the club is a bit stringent.

*St. Andrews: This course located in Scotland is the birthplace of golf and where tradition eventually grew out. But St. Andrews is just one of several golf courses within the country. In fact, six others are tied up with the St. Andrews Links Organization with “The Old One” being the most notable and the oldest courses out there.

* Royal County Down ; Newcastle , North Ireland: Being one of the oldest golf clubs in North Ireland , it has a scenic golf course for the ones who enjoys challenges of golf in a picturesque background. You have to walk here all as buggies of any sort are not allowed here.

* Muirfield; Gullane, Scotland – This golf course is one of the oldest in the world and provides challenge for golfers of all experience levels. It has played host to several different tournaments and championships over the years and remains one of the most sought out trips for golfers.

You certainly have your choice of golf courses all around the world depending on how far you want to travel. But don’t forget to look right in your own backyard. Some of the small local golf courses can present just as much challenge.
