2 Secrets For Getting Your Golf Ball Out Of That Heavy Rough

Rough

It might be nice, if a little boring, if you could keep your golf on the fairway and out of the bunkers and rough all the way to the green however in the real world that does not happen even for the very best of professional golfers.

All of us hit a few shots, or in several instances many shots, wide of the fairway and into a bunker or the rough but the true problem arises when your ball ends up in heavy rough with grass coming up to your knees. In this case all too many golfers take several ‘hacks’ at getting their ball out and the hole becomes a complete catastrophe.

But, anyone who has ever watched the professionals at work will know only too well that this does not have to be a disaster. So, what is their secret to success?

There are two secrets the first of which applies when you are in the deep rough but still some way from the green and the second applies when the ball is reasonably close to the green.

If you are a long way from the putting surface then your aim should not be to gain distance from your shot but should merely be to get your ball out of the rough and onto the fairway so that it is in the best possible position to then get you onto the green.

To achieve this you are going to have to make use of a wedge or a nine iron, both of which have enough weight to tackle the tall grass and sufficient loft to get the ball up into the air and clear of the grass rapidly.

You will also need to make sure that the blade of your club is open when you are addressing the ball because the grass will take hold of the club head as you make your shot. You must then minimize the amount of grass you are swinging through which requires you to make a very upright back swing and a strong down swing which is controlled with a very firm left hand. This particular shot will not get you much distance however it will pop your ball up into the air fast and take it forward sufficiently to put you back on the fairway.

If you are fairly close to the putting green then this shot will again work extremely well but you must take care to ensure that your ball does not roll clear through the green. Here therefore you must aim to hit two or three inches behind your ball and make sure that your shot includes a complete follow through. This produces a shot which is very similar to that used to get your ball out of sand and will not only get your ball into the air to clear the heavy rough but will also produce a soft landing on the green and thus minimize any forward roll.
